“Last year’s vaccine had a particularly low level of effectiveness against this strain. Researchers measure a vaccine’s effectiveness by comparing the percentage of people who got sick even though they were vaccinated with the percentage of those who got sick and were not vaccinated. Last year, the vaccine’s effectiveness rate against the H3N2 strain was just 13 percent. Normally, the flu vaccine is between 50 to 60 percent effective, Frieden said. Still, last year’s vaccine was quite effective against other strains of the flu, including the H1N1 strain, he noted.”
