Do I Need A Tetanus Shot?

Posted by:

medical-logo-150x150As a child you most probably received a primary series of vaccines against tetanus called DPT (now called DTaP).  This is to protect against diptheria, pertussis, and tetanus.  The last scheduled tetanus shot in this series is at age 15.

The booster dose tetanus and diptheria (Td) is recommended every 10 years.  In addition, it is now recommended that a booster be given for pertussis.  This booster is called Tdap.

Adults aged 19-64 years should receive a single dose of (Tdap) to replace a single dose of (Td) if it has been 10 or more years since their last dose of tetanus booster (Td).  After that it is only necessary to take the (Td) booster every 10 years.
